Those odds decrease significantly the older the bike gets. While any new bike can have an issue that leaves you stranded, it's not only less likely to happen, but also a better probability that Joe's General Motorcycle Miscellany in Bumfuck, Egypt will have your part. For that notion alone, I would pass.Īnother thing to consider is going to be parts availability if and when you break down on the road. You're not likely to have the riding skill to SAFELY stay straight and upright in the event this happens, and your safety is paramount. I'm going to assume you're not an expert motorcycle mechanic since this would be your first bike, so the problem of something going wrong mechanically while you're riding rises to the forefront. Sure, the concept of building a relationship with your bike through working on it is a romantic one, but it's not practical or safe. I mentioned yesterday to another poster that a first bike should never also be a bike that needs works. The deals are out there And if you want an ironhead then go for it but be prepared to do the work and try to buy one as original as you can. I had the wife of a friend of mine selling a low milefor 2k last month when they got into a bind. It's a lot easier to start with an worn out stock bike and you can still get Sportsters like that for 2k all day long but you can also get a much newer sportster for that price. With a worn-out but original bike that's a whole lot easier to do because you haven't had 10 different people over the last 40 years doing questionable repairs with questionable quality parts. When you buy a bike this old you have to go through it completely to get it in decent shape. Harley's prior to 1970 prices go way up for originality but post 70 for some reason a fucked up chopped and trashed ironhead costs about the same as a worn out but unmolested original. If you really want an old ironhead sportster or alternator Shovelhead then you need to search for one that is as original as possible. Nothing else to say other than one thing that I'd like to add. you'll do some maintenance on it, gather some tools, get a chance to immerse yourself in the culture and then decide what kind of chopper you want to build (not buy). Get a used evo sportster for $2500-$3000 and learn to ride and learn to love it. It'll mostly likely break your bank, and you'll stop riding altogether when you are thousands of additional dollars in and still dont have a running machine that you can enjoy riding with your buddies. I know it'll require maintenance and money, but i've rebuilt a dozen engines at this point and I know what I'm doing and I have a growing collection of tools I've gathered over my decade of riding and rebuilding. I have been riding for 10+ years and I'm just now rounding up the parts to eventually build my first chopper with 35mm forks. This bike requires additional maintenance because it's someone else's unfinished project. Iron heads require additional maintenance.Ĭhoppers require additional maintenance due to rigidity with vibrating engine. Need to find an OEM part?
